Project Management in Natural Disasters

Lyn Smith, Excel Corporation

Lyn will speak about the challenges involved when coordinating disaster responses across several governmental agencies prior to, during and after a disaster such as the Wichita-Haysville tornado. He will also talk about the National Guard’s training program and how the Guard’s training program and how the Guard works with the Kansas Division of Emergency Management to rapidly respond to disasters. Come prepared with questions, as Lyn would like for this to be an interactive discussion.

Lyn’s career with Excel spans 30 years. He has served in various positions in plant operations and administration. He has been a programmer, system analyst, project manager and was the manager of Information Technology Operations and Technical Services. His current position is Manager of Information Technology Administration. Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery Planning are among his current responsibilities.

Lyn is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Kansas Army National Guard. His duties in the Kansas National Guard include immediate response to disasters. He was the Commander of Troops during the Wichita-Haysville tornado in May 1999. He was the senior liaison officer in Kansas City, Kansas during the floods of 1993. He has been personally involved in every Army National Guard response to major disasters in Kansas over the past fifteen years.
