Managing Multiple Similar Fast Track Projects in Parallel
Rodney L. Simms
Project Manager
ICM, Inc

In the past five years, the fuel ethanol industry has progressed from building one or two 30 million gallon per year plants each year to the construction of over 1 BGY of capacity annually. The majority of these plants are being designed and constructed by a unique partnership between ICM, a Colwich KS based company, and Fagen, a Granite Falls, MN based company. The evolution of this partnership and the nature of the project management opportunities it creates will be discussed.

Rodney L. Simms is a management consultant and trainer who specializes in project management, business and employee development, process and manufacturing improvement, creativity, and efficiency. He has over forty years experience in engineering development, production management, project management, and sales and marketing as well as over six years of CEO responsibility. He has held officer-level positions in small, medium, and large organizations including serving as Vice President of Advanced Manufacturing Technology for RJR Nabisco.

During the past 4 years, Mr. Simms has served as the ICM Project Manager for the design of fuel ethanol facilities producing over 1BB gal/yr. A certified trainer in Creative Thinking, Mr. Simms also uses Creative Thinking workshops with “real life” exercises including, within the last few years, the development of five year strategic business and marketing plans for two corporations, the organizational re-engineering of a. Fortune 100 company, re-establishing the quality of the premier product line for a Fortune 200 company, and developing and implementing a 200%-three year growth plan for a $45MM division of privately owned $7+B company.

Mr. Simms holds a degree in chemical engineering as well as management training from both Duke and Michigan Universities. He is a graduate of Crosby’s Quality School, has published and presented over 100 papers, has written chapters for three books, and has written a regular column for a major food industry publication.
